Sometimes silence reveals it all.
There were couple of Kannada movies that were really popular and critically acclaimed during its release. My siblings specifically my brother was suggesting it or I shall say convincing me to watch them since a really long time. So few days ago while having a conversation about music and movies in general, he however referred to those movies. So two days ago, I finally budged in and decided to watch one of them. And I've been binge watching it since then. The movie was titled ''Galipata'' meaning Kite. It is one of those exhilarating cinematic creations that has deeply moved me. The movie is about three friends seemingly bored with life who then decide to visit the grandfather of one of the friend in one of the most exotic and picturesque locations in Karnataka for a break and little did they know that this trip would be a life changing experience for them.
But I want to purely emphasize on the lead character Saumya, who is a school teacher and is so for the sheer love of it. Her life is rather a downhearted one as she had lost her husband to a devastating incident on the day of her wedding. Saumya is a crestfallen soul who has accepted silence as her tone in life. She is often found reminiscing about her husband with some of his belongings as it is only one of the few memories she holds onto when she feels lonely. The male lead character who is a happy-go-lucky and has a gleeful charm falls for her and not for her circumstances or her looks but for her captivating silence. A silence which speaks in volumes that words or expressions cannot. He is someone who finds humour and tries to make people around him smile during serious and tough times only to find himself anxious and perturbed in her presence or while speaking to her. Such is the power of silence that replaces people from their true self.
He expresses his feelings through inscribing words on a kite and by writing a touching poem. But she rejects his proposal despite of her developing a liking towards him stating that she is content with her memories of her deceased husband. In one instance where the father of the lead character tries to convince Saumya to marry his son, he states ''As parents, when our children need us in the utmost important situations in life, we choose to stay silent and that is the biggest mistake we commit.'' Silence has the potential to literally destroy everything. The bigger sin than committing one is to silently watch one commit it.
The void in Saumya's life was widening from time to time that even her in-laws who looked after her as their own daughter couldn't help fill it. We possibly will encounter such situations in our life at some point where silence is the obvious path that we might choose to follow.
